Executive Summary

Unemployment problem in youth remains a pressing challenge in Nepal. The mismatch between employer’s requirements and skills acquired  necessitates a rising demand of  vocational training to create a more market  oriented skilled workforce. Ship Mela 2081 is a one-month open-ground festival designed to empower 2081 young people in Kathmandu delivering short term vocational skill training for employment and gainful employment purposes. By offering accessible training programs in high-demand fields, the project aims to bridge the skill gap and increase youth employability in Nepal.  This concept note outlines the project's mission, objectives, target audience, and key activities.

Mission:

Empower  Kathmandu Metropolitan City with high demand vocational skills through a one-month, open-access Skills festival at Tundikhel.

Objective:

  1. Implement short term vocational skill development training to 2081 young people in Kathmandu.
  2. Provide  young residents of Kathmandu with accessible and free of cost vocational skill development training programs (1 week - 1 month) in various high demand occupations..
  3. Raise awareness about the importance of vocational skills for employment in Nepal
  4. Showcase a diverse range of vocational skills to promote their value and encourage career exploration.
  5. Foster a community friendly atmosphere around learning and skill development at Tundikhel.
  6. Equip participants with the necessary skills to gain employment or pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

●      Venue: Tundikhel, Kathmandu

●      Duration: 30 days

●      Offered Programs: Diverse skill development vocational training programs ranging from 1 week to 1 month (tailored programs based on local needs and job market demands, done via Skill Gap Analysis).

●      Important Dates

○      Launching of the program: 16th Chaitra 2080

○      Training Commencement: 1st Baishakh 2081

○      Graduation Ceremony: 30th Baishakh 2081

Venue

Tundikhel, a large open ground in the center of Kathmandu City, chosen for its high visibility and accessibility to promote the project's central message and attract a large audience

Target Audience

Youth in Kathmandu seeking employment or entrepreneurial opportunities along with potential migrant workers and returnee migrants.

Visitor Engagement: 3000 additional audience

Training Programs

The festival will offer a variety of vocational skill development training programs ranging from 1 week to 1 month, including the sectors as follows:

  2. Construction
  3. Hospitality & Management
  4. Information & Technology
  5. Mechanical
  6. Art and Culture
  7. Tailoring
  8. Beautician
  9. Interior Designing
  10. Green Solutions

Outcomes:

By delivering  vocational skill development training to 2000 young people,, the Skill Festival will contribute towards  increased employment opportunities, youth entrepreneurship, and a more market demand oriented  skilled workforce in Kathmandu

●      Increased access to vocational skill development  training opportunities for Young Kathmandu residents.

●      Up-skilling and empowering the community with in-demand vocational skills.

●      Creating a vibrant space for learning, skill development, and community engagement at Tundikhel.

Monitoring and Evaluation

●      Pre- and post-training assessments to measure skill development.

●      Track gainful employment and  job placement rates for graduates after 3 months.

●      Conduct participant satisfaction surveys.

Sustainability

Beyond the festival, we plan to:

●      Establish a referral network connecting graduates with employers.

●      Develop an online platform for alumni to access job opportunities and continuing education resources.

Kathmandu is the capital and oldest metropolitan city of Nepal. The city is the urban core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which also contains two sister cities namely Patan or Lalitpur, 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) to its southeast and Bhaktapur, 14 kilometers (8.7 mi) to its east.
